Understanding the Causes of Neck Kinks
Neck kinks or acute torticollis is a type of neck muscle spasm that causes a sudden and intense neck pain with limited neck movement. This condition can occur to anyone, including adults and children.
One of the primary causes of neck kinks is poor posture or holding the neck in an awkward position. The muscles and ligaments in the neck can become stiff and sore when this happens. This is why individuals who work in jobs that require them to sit or stand for long periods, such as office workers, drivers, and surgeons, are more likely to develop neck kinks.
Another common cause of neck kinks is sudden movement, such as twisting the neck suddenly, sleeping in the wrong position, or looking at the computer screen at an awkward angle for an extended period. Doing any of these activities repeatedly can lead to repeated muscle strain that results in neck kinks.
Stress and anxiety are also known to cause neck kinks. muscle tension often accompanies stress, which can result in a stiff, sore neck. When stress continues, it can cause chronic tension, which makes you more prone to neck kinks.
Neck kinks are also prevalent in individuals with underlying health conditions such as arthritis of the neck, fibromyalgia, or a herniated disc. Also, cervical dystonia, a neurological movement disorder, can cause neck muscles to contract and spasm involuntarily, leading to torticollis.
